Creating a more vibrant and liveable city centre and village hubs is a key part of our Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision.
Our creative community has told us there is a critical shortage of creative workspaces and that Sydney’s high costs make it hard for artists to remain in the City. Providing artists’ studios and creative spaces ensures cultural vitality and encourages our artists and creative community to continue to live and work in the City.
The City has already begun identifying and creating temporary studio spaces and over the next ten years will work to create permanent spaces by transforming currently unused areas in our community facilities, and redeveloping entire sites.
The Cultural Grants and Sponsorships Program is an annual program offering funds of $5000 or more to organisations undertaking cultural activities in or of benefit to the City of Sydney’s Local Government Area.
The City takes cultural activity to be a broad spectrum including performing and visual arts and crafts, literature, film, digital arts, design, architecture, history and heritage, food and wine, and their expression through public debate, festivals, exhibitions, performances, competitions and public celebrations of importance to individual communities and greater Sydney.
In a $6 million project, the City of Sydney is restoring the historic Tabernacle building into a new cultural and community facility. For decades, the Tabernacle was a much-loved place of worship for locals and was also a source of inspiration for pavement scribe Arthur Stace’s famous message ‘Eternity’ which he wrote on Sydney footpaths for more than 30 years.
The Burton St Tabernacle will house Darlinghurst Theatre Company and be the home for community and cultural events including performance and visual arts exhibitions.
