Inner South
A short hop from City Central, Redfern and Waterloo consisted of sandhills and marshlands at the beginning of European settlement. Later, Chinese immigrants moved in and the district was known for its market gardens. Aboriginal people settled in the vicinity in the 1920s and 1940s, and when their citizenship right was recognised in the 1960s more indigenous people migrated from rural NSW to work in local factories.
Today modern Redfern has become a vital urban centre for Aboriginal culture and life, showcasing contemporary indigenous art in the local galleries. Waterloo, meanwhile, is celebrated as one of Sydney’s most vibrant villages. The area boasts a rich social history and public housing community, and in recent years the transformation of Danks Street has added an arts hub and foodie’s haven saturated with art galleries, hip furniture showrooms, gourmet cafes and ethical food stores.
CarriageWorks at Eveleigh is an exciting cultural addition to the area. During industrialisation, train carriages for Sydney's burgeoning rail network were built here from scratch. Now, subtly restored, its cavernous interiors host theatrical productions, art exhibitions and a farmers' market. Always full of colourful characters and community activity, recent developments are making this village more varied than ever.
