Parking Guidelines
Regulations & Guidelines
Before using a parking meter motorists should always check parking signposts located close to all meters to confirm pay parking hours in the area. Street signs take priority over parking information displayed on meters (for example, in the event of Special Event Clearways and road closures).
The following regulations outline the rules for parking in NSW:
The RTA’s Parking Rules Guide (PDF 800Kb) provides a summary of the common parking rules in NSW.
Loading Zones
The Australian Road Rules (Part 12, Division 5, Section 179) outlines the rules for Loading Zones. The RTA defines Loading Zones as:
“…clearly signed parking areas set aside for short-term use by certain vehicles when loading or unloading goods in the course of business or when dropping off or picking up passengers.
Loading zones are available for vehicles that are principally designed and constructed for carrying goods. The majority of 4WD vehicles, hatchbacks and other coupé and sports type vehicles are not principally designed and constructed for carrying goods and are therefore not permitted to use loading zones”
Loading Zone vehicles can remain parked in an area for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the vehicle type. Motorists with a specified loading zone vehicle must obtain a Loading Zone ticket from the parking meter and display this on their vehicle dashboard to avoid receiving an infringement. There is no charge for the ticket.
For more information visit the RTA's website on Loading Zones
Mobility Parking Scheme
Vehicles displaying a Mobility Parking Scheme Authority can park in metered or ticketed parking areas without paying for parking. For more information on the Mobility Parking Scheme visit the RTA's website.
