Traffic on Union Street

The City of Sydney is committed to cooperating with residents, government and transport operators to provide a high quality transport network for a sustainable, vibrant City.

Public Transport
Central Sydney is served by a comprehensive and convenient public transport network, ranging from buses and trains to light rail and ferries.  See this page for links to timetables, maps and travel advice for residents and visitors.

Late Night Transport
To ensure that you return home safely after a night out in Sydney, there are a range of late night transport options available.

Light Rail
Light rail has the potential to dramatically improve accessibility within central Sydney and inner suburbs. The City has investigated a number of potential routes for light rail, including a line on the City’s western edge to serve Barangaroo (East Darling Harbour), and a route between Circular Quay and Central station.

Cycling
Cycling is a convenient, sustainable and enjoyable way to get around Sydney. The City of Sydney has begun construction of a high quality network of cycle paths and lanes that will make cycling a relaxed, safe, mainstream transport option for adults and children.

Pedestrian Cycling and Traffic Calming (PCTC) Plans
Community driven plans to manage and calm traffic on local roads, increase pedestrian, bicycle and public transport access and provide better safety and amenity for local residents.

Car Sharing
Car sharing is a convenient, low cost alternative to car ownership, and the City of Sydney is establishing dedicated spaces for share cars throughout our neighbourhoods. Members can simply book a car by phone or internet, and use it for an hour or a day.  It’s perfect for residents who need access to a car occasionally, but don’t want the hassle and expense of car ownership.

Village to Village Shuttle Bus Service
The Village to Village Shuttle Service is a free community bus service. There two routes: Redfern & Waterloo to Broadway Shopping Centre, Glebe and RPA Hospital and return; and Redfern to Surry Hills, Central, St Vincents Hospital, Kings Cross, Potts Point and Woolloomooloo.

Motorcycles and Scooters
Motorcycle and scooter use is growing rapidly in Sydney. In response, the City has developed a Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy and Action Plan to ensure issues faced by riders are considered in all aspects of City planning and transport management.
