Motorcycles and Scooters

Motorcycle and scooter ownership and use is growing rapidly in metropolitan Sydney, and in the City of Sydney. Motorcycles can be a practical and low-cost alternative to the car.

To address problems faced by motorcycle riders, the City has adopted a Motorcycle and Scooter Strategy and Action Plan.

Motorcycle & Scooter Strategy and Action Plan

Key aspects of the Strategy are:

No More Tickets in Timed Areas

Motorcycle and Scooter riders no longer need to buy or display a ticket in the City of Sydney, which includes the CBD, Pyrmont, Redfern, Ultimo, Darlinghurst and Kings Cross. Simply park as you usually would, and remember to observe the time restrictions. If you need to park all day, use an untimed motorcycle-only space instead.

Untimed Parking Spaces in the City Centre

Over the past two years, the City has more than trebled the number of motorcycle spaces in the city centre, all of which are now untimed and free. In response to requests from riders, the City has created a number of additional parking spaces in the northern part of the City, where competition for street space is high.

Please do the right thing by pedestrians and your fellow riders by using legal spaces only, and avoiding footpaths or pedestrianised areas. If you only need to stay for a short time, take advantage of the timed free on-street parking and remember to observe the time restrictions. If you cannot find a free space on-street, see the City’s guide to parking stations, below.

Given the very high competition for street space in the CBD, it is not possible to meet all demand for free on-street parking. All car, bus and motorcycle parking areas are subject to changes over time to meet demand for bus layovers, bus lanes, cycle paths, loading zones, construction zones, footpath widening or street events.

Discounted Secure Parking

The City of Sydney offers all-day parking in the Goulburn Street parking station for only $5 a day.  There is already CCTV monitoring of these bikes, and the City will improve security further with a locking rail and gear lockers.

Parking Station Guide

Private parking stations also offer motorcycle parking. See this link for information on the location and price of off-street motorcycle parking in Central Sydney, Ultimo, Pyrmont and Kings Cross.

Cheaper Permits

If you are a City resident, on-street parking permits for your motorcycle or scooter are now half the price of standard car permits.

Better Security for Motorcycles

Motorbikes and scooters can be vulnerable to theft. The City will begin a trial of anchor points and locking rails for motorcycles in untimed parking areas. Check the City’s website regularly for updates on the location of these spaces.
