Supporting Film & Television

City of Sydney and the Film industry

Support for the Film Industry

The City of Sydney is committed to supporting a professional film and television industry that produces content for domestic and overseas markets. Sydney's natural beauty, especially its magnificent harbour, its climate, famous landmarks and its well developed infrastructure and facilities make it a location of choice for both Australian and international film and television productions and for local and international commercials. Productions that feature our city and its icons provide economic benefits and help to promote the City of Sydney as well as Australian culture and ideas abroad.

Film and Television Office of NSW (FTO)

The FTO plays a critical development role for the NSW film and television industry and has a number of programs of assistance including project development, production investment, a young filmmakers fund, and support for industry and audience development.

The FTO also provides expert advice on locations, policy, industry contacts and production matters.

Local Feature Film and Television Production

Sydney is regularly used as a backdrop, either wholly or in part, for many major Australian film productions, for example:

  • The Man Who Sued God
  • Babe: Pig in a City
  • Oscar and Lucinda
  • Children of the Revolution
  • Looking for Alibrandi
  • The Monkey's Mask
  • Risk' and Passion
  • Candy.

The Australian television industry also features our City extensively, producing episodes for productions such as:

  • Water Rats
  • Wildside
  • Love My Way
  • Home and Away
  • Dangerous
  • Major Crime.

In addition, many local television commercials are produced in our City.

International Film Productions

Sydney’s reputation for being “film friendly” continues to grow year by year. City authorities have a history of being able to deliver a sophisticated range of services to the industry and regularly extend goodwill and cooperation to international film companies. Sydney is well known for the quality of its local film facilities such as Fox Studios Australia at Moore Park and offers world’s best practice technical support and services for film production.

Sydney has successfully hosted a number of Hollywood productions including:

  • The Matrix' and its sequels
  • Mission Impossible 2
  • Kangaroo Jack
  • Stealth
  • Son of the Mask
  • Superman Returns.
