Temporary Full Road Closure

The City of Sydney allows for temporary, full or partial road closures for events, parades, marches and construction work.

The City will only consider any proposed road closure on Sundays due to the need to minimise traffic congestion in the city on other days.

Events/Parades/Marches

The City provides four preferred routes that have been proven successful. The use of the routes would minimise planning by the applicant. The City’s preferred parade route maps can be downloaded as PDF documents.

Mobile Crane and other Road Works

The City provides approval for various roadwork and road related activities including the following:

  • To stand and operate a mobile crane, cherry picker, concrete boom pump, travel tower and boom lift
  • Road opening
  • To place barricades on footpaths.

Partial Road Closures

The City provides approval for partial road closures when there is at least one through lane in any direction left open for traffic use during an event.

Applying for a Temporary Full Road Closure Application

When applying for a temporary full road closure application, please ensure you read the instructions and attached links carefully and ensure all fields on the application form are filled out correctly.

Fields on this form marked with an (*) are mandatory and inadequate information may delay the processing of your application and could incur further fees.

You will need to review and/or attach the following:

  1. Review Schedule C - Temporary Road Closure Conditions (PDF 18Kb)
  2. Review Fees & Charges (PDF 71Kb)
  3. Review List of Major Roads (PDF 66Kb)
  4. Provide a site specific Traffic Management Plan (TMP) in accordance with AS1742.3 requirements.  The TMP needs to be prepared by a Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) certified designer for Traffic Control Plans (Example attached) (PDF 14Kb)
  5. Review the Example of a consultation letter (PDF 14Kb) for letterbox drop and attach a ‘draft’ copy of the consultation letter with this application (if applicable)
  6. Review the Example of a Temporary Road Closure advertisement (PDF 14Kb) and attach a ‘draft’ copy of the advertisement with this application (if applicable)
  7. Apply for a Crane Permit (PDF 344Kb) and/or a Temporary Works Application (PDF 344Kb) if your temporary road closure requires a crane or a pump
  8. Apply for a Road Opening Permit if your temporary road closure involves road works.

Road Closure Approvals

  1. If the proposal is supported by City Officers, it will be presented to the Sydney Traffic Committee (STC) for final approval.  Note: The Sydney Traffic Committee may refuse the application or give conditional approval.
  2. When lodging an application you should refer to the attached “Submission Dates for Temporary Full Road Closure Application” (PDF 63Kb) for the Sydney Traffic Committee (STC).  Meetings for STC occur once a month (late submission fees may be applicable)
