Through images and text, internationally acclaimed Australian artist William Yang reflects upon his struggle to reclaim his Chinese heritage through his experience climbing the nine sacred mountains of China. Passing as Chinese but unable to understand the language his ambivalent sense of dislocation is summed up in the term yuan xiang – “the place from which one comes, but to which it is no longer possible to return”.
