Multicultural Art Competition 2009 – Australian Identity?!

Running for the second year, the City’s Multicultural Art Competition 2009 aims to showcase illustrative artworks that tell a story and encapsulate the City’s cultural diversity.

The competition opened on Monday 20 July 2009 and closed on Monday 31 August 2009. A total of 96 artworks entered the competition, with artists from within the City of Sydney, metropolitan Sydney and as far away as Indonesia and Russia.

This year’s theme was - Australian Identity?!

The 2009 Multicultural Art Competition called on artists to explore what contemporary Australia means to them. From works presenting scenes of cultural diversity in everyday local communities to national icons such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Three Sisters, each of this year’s ten finalists drew inspiration from their own experiences of Australian life.

Exhibition Launch

The Launch of the exhibition for the 2009 Multicultural Art Competition was held on Saturday 17 August at Custom’s House at 12pm. Over 160 people attended the launch, where the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Phillip Black, and Sylvia Ross, the Head of the School of Art at the College of Fine Arts, officially announced the finalists and major prize winners.
