Homelessness Strategy

The City of Sydney’s Homelessness Strategy 2007-12 aims to end chronic or long term homelessness within the inner-city by 2017.   Working in partnership with the Commonwealth and State government, the not-for-profit, philanthropic and corporate sector the City aims to facilitate pathways out of homelessness for rough sleepers; prevent people from becoming entrenched in homeless in the inner-city or from entering homelessness in other regions and; ensure that those who do become homeless are referred out of homelessness quickly.

The City’s approach to homelessness recognises that everyone in the community shares an equal right to use and enjoy public spaces. The City’s Homelessness Strategy adopts a compassionate, collaborative and inclusive approach to managing the impacts of homelessness in the public domain.  The City works with government services, community stakeholders and homelessness service providers to broker compassionate and practical solutions to issues arising in relation to homelessness and public spaces.

The City also recognises and prioritises the right of all people to have access to safe, secure and affordable housing with whatever support is needed to enable them to live independently.
The City aims to achieve the goal and objectives of our Homelessness Strategy through direct service provision and collaboration with external stakeholders; project initiatives and policy development; community development and support and; research and advocacy.

The Homelessness Strategy 2007-12 will be reviewed in 2011 to ensure that our approach reflects best practice according to emerging evidence from local and international programs; is responding to local data and the results of local evaluations and; that the City of Sydney is aligning our efforts and corresponding targets to end chronic homelessness and reduce and prevent homelessness with those of the Federal and State government to reflect an ‘all of government’ approach to homelessness in the City of Sydney’s Local Government Area.
