Alcohol Free Zones

The City of Sydney supports a comprehensive approach to tackling alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour. Alcohol Free Zones (AFZ) are one of the many strategies used to address these issues.

You can download the AFZ Ministerial Guidelines as a PDF document.

Responding to requests from residents and Police, the City of Sydney is establishing new Alcohol Free Zones (AFZ) in some streets in the City Central, Kings Cross,  Newtown, Redfern and Surry Hills Police Local Area Commands.

Alcohol Free Zones aim to reduce alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour in identified locations in order to help create a safer environment for residents, businesses and visitors.

It is an offence to drink alcohol on any street or footpath where an Alcohol Free Zone exists, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for a period of up to three years.

Alcohol Free Zones only apply to streets and footpaths where indicated by signage.  Alcohol Free Zones do not apply to parks.

Any existing or future footpath area licensed by the City for the purpose of food or alcohol consumption as part of a café or restaurant will be exempt from these restrictions.

The NSW Police are responsible for enforcing Alcohol Free Zones.  Contact the closest local police station to report any breaches:
