Small Bar Seminar Downloads

On 27 April, the City of Sydney hosted a free Small Bar Seminar to provide support, advice and help for people wanting to set up a new Small Bar in Sydney. The speakers covered a range of topics including the Melbourne experience, licences and processes and how small bars can benefit Sydney’s economic and social life.

Craig Allchin     

Craig Allchin

Director, Six Degrees
Craig Allchin is an architect and urban designer, and director of Six Degrees. In the 1990s he lived in the Melbourne city centre and worked with on a range of projects around the revitalisation of the Melbourne CBD, including one of the first small bars in Melbourne, Meyers Place, which Six Degrees Designed, built and part owned.  He's lived in Sydney since 1999 and in 2008 wrote The Fine Grain, a report recommending approaches to revitalising Sydney’s laneways and smaller streets and spaces for the city of Sydney.

Ross McCulloch

Ross McCulloch

Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
Ross McCulloch works in the policy unit of the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing and has considerable experience in the administration of the liquor laws.

Ross has been involved in the rollout of the State's new liquor laws that commenced last year and in providing information and assistance to the industry in understanding the trading entitlements and processes for operators under the new liquor laws.

Chris Lane and Luke Heard

Chris Lane and Luke Heard

Small Bar
Chris Lane and Luke Heard are co-owners of Sydney’s first hotel (general bar) licence; Small Bar which opened in Erskine Street in December last year.  Chris has worked in various bars including the Bavarian Hospitality Group as a barmen and later Duty Manager for over six years.  Chris is currently completing degrees in marketing and PR, as well as of course managing Small Bar.  Luke has worked both behind the bar and in advising hospitality venues for over seven years.  Luke currently manages the hospitality consulting division at Lawler Partners, as well as managing Small Bar with Chris.  Luke and Chris are school friends and have experienced great success with their business to date.
