Redfern - Waterloo Draft Built Environment Plan 2 (BEP2)
City Submission to Redfern Waterloo Built Environment Plan 2
The Redfern Waterloo Authority and Housing NSW recently publicly exhibited a conceptual housing strategy aiming to revitalize two key housing estates in Redfern and Waterloo. The strategy proposes a new approach to the mix of social, affordable and private housing throughout the area as well as new facilities, parks, community and recreational spaces.
The City made a comprehensive submission to the proposal outlining our in-principle support for the proposed housing mix and key recommendations to be implemented when developing the strategy further:
- Residential rezoning should be through the Sydney LEP 2011 rather than Part 3A;
- The City should be the consent authority for any future development applications;
- An inquiry into potential rail access in Waterloo is essential;
- ESD commitments must be evident and highly evolved;
- Healthy trees need to be retailed and a canopy cover of 30% achieved;
- Alternative sites for displaced social housing within Sydney LGA must be resolved; and
- Built form heights, floor space ratios and setbacks need to be amended.
