Parks & Open Spaces

Parks and Open Spaces

Parks and open spaces play a very important role in supporting biodiversity, as they provide much of the habitat necessary to enable plants and animals to survive. The total area of parkland within the City of Sydney LGA is 377 hectares, which equates to approximately 23sqm per resident, and covers around 15% of the total LGA.

The area of publicly accessible parkland which is managed by the City of Sydney is 188.5 hectares, and this includes around 400 parks and open spaces. The remainder are managed by other government authorities and trusts.

Trees and other vegetation have important benefits in the urban environment. In the City's streets, there are approximately 28,000 trees maintained by the City, and approximately 8,000 mature trees located in parks that are managed by the City. Not only do trees and other vegetation they provide shade, filter dust and pollution, limit strong winds and cool surrounding air, they also have enormous aesthetic benefits, improving streetscapes, adding natural colour and providing habitat for birds and other fauna species.

The City has many programs and policies in place to protect, manage and maintain parks, open spaces and trees within the LGA. For more information about parks and open spaces, click here. For information about tree management, click here.
