Parks, Trees and Plants
Parks, trees and plants are vital assets in a sustainable city as they provide the food and habitats necessary to enable biodiversity to thrive.
The City of Sydney maintains numerous parks, street trees, reserves and open spaces. Due to water restrictions, emphasis has been on maintenance rather than major new plantings. Preference is given to hardy plant varieties that do not require frequent watering.
Improvements and landscaping are continually being made to a number of parks in the LGA. Sydney Park for example is being transformed into an urban woodland with endemic plant communities.
The City also recognises that trees have important benefits in the urban environment. Not only do they provide shade, filter dust and pollution, limit strong winds and cool surrounding air, they also have enormous aesthetic benefits, improving streetscapes, adding natural colour and attracting bird life.
The City has many programs and policies in place to protect, manage and maintain parks, open spaces and trees within the Local Government Area. For more information about parks and open spaces, click here. For information about tree management, click here.
