Electric Vehicles

Charging Station

Lord Mayor Clover Moore and Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited CEO Mr Masahiko Takahashi launch the City's first electric car

Electric car trial!

The City is now proud to own one of Australia’s first electric cars as part of its vehicle fleet – the compact Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

The innovative car uses a lithium-ion battery and runs on a high output electronic motor, which means that no petrol is fuelled and zero greenhouse gas emissions are released.

The car can reach tops of 130kms per hour and can completely recharge in under 8 hours using a standard 15 amp power point.

Charging station

Sydney is now home to Australia’s first public roadside electric vehicle charging station. Officially opened by Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP, the charging station,
in Derby Place, Glebe, was installed by Visionstream and is managed by
ChargePoint.

Each day more than 700,000 cars travel through the Sydney Local Government Area, significantly contributing to smog, greenhouse gas pollution, congestion and noise. However, electric vehicles (EVs) have zero exhaust emissions. Together with public transport, walking and cycling, electric vehicles will become part of Sydney’s climate change solution.

The EV station will recharge a converted plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius in three hours using 100 per cent GreenPower from Origin.

Electric vehicles will be available as part of the GoGet car share scheme. GoGet co-founder, Bruce Jeffreys said members would be able to drive the plug-in electric hybrid at the same price as the rest of the GoGet hybrid fleet.

The Sydney EV station is a public demonstration of the viability of charging stations with preparations underway for a national rollout. ChargePoint is planning charging station pilot programs later this year in Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.

The City of Sydney is looking at buying retrofitted plug-in Hybrid EVs and new EVs for its vehicle fleet as part of its goal to reduce carbon emissions by 70 per cent from 2006 levels by 2030.
