Waste

Cigarette Butts Collected Around the City of Sydney

Waste collection is widely recognised as a traditional function of Councils. However, as the environmental costs of waste have become more widely known, the challenge for local government has been to adopt a far more comprehensive approach to waste management.

Increasing emphasis is being placed on improving recycling rates and providing information and resources to avoid waste. Today, the City of Sydney not only manages domestic waste collection and disposal, but plays an important role in promoting waste avoidance, minimisation and resource recovery within the Local Government Area (LGA).
