What the City is Doing

The water supply and waste water authority in the City of Sydney Local Government Area (LGA) is Sydney Water Corporation. However, responsibility for conserving water and minimising water pollution, is shared by all levels of government, the business community, industry, community groups and individuals.

City of Sydney seeks to achieve water savings, implement sustainable water supply sources and improve stormwater quality within the City area.

Total Water Cycle Management Strategy

The City has developed a Total Water Cycle Management (TWCM) framework which looks to treat stormwater and wastewater as water resources rather than waste.

The TWCM aims to integrate the management of the three key elements of urban water cycle: drinking water, stormwater and waste water which have been traditionally managed separately.

Using the TWCM framework, City of Sydney will develop a TWCM strategy which will identify opportunities for sourcing and using alternative sources of water (roof water, stormwater, blackwater and sewer mining) within the City and for integrating vegetation into the built form to ensure that the stormwater quality is improved.

Sydney Water Partnership, Business Program

Smart Business Live Green

City of Sydney and Sydney Water have formed a partnership to promote and implement water saving actions for businesses using between 10-80 kilolitres of water a day.

As part of the partnership, Sydney Water has funded two Sustainable Business Officers. The Business Officers will be undertaking water-use assessments for businesses and recommending water-saving actions.

A number of organisations have already joined the Smart Business Live Green program and have increased their efficiency to make real savings on their bills.

More than $230,000 of savings in water use have been identified for businesses in the City.

Savings of more than 200,000 litres a day have been identified as part of the program, with savings of more than 90,000 litres a day already achieved.

Cooks River Sustainability Initiative (CRSI)

City of Sydney is one of eight councils working together on the Our River project. The aim of this project is to create an integrated river management plan to conserve water and improve the health of the Cooks River, through the Cooks River Sustainability Initiative.

As part of this initiative, the City has developed a sub-catchment action plan for Munni Street Sub-catchment (covering parts of Erskineville, Newtown, St Peters areas) The Munni Street Sub-catchment drains to Alexandra Canal, which ultimately drains to the Cooks River.

The Munni Street sub-catchment plan was developed by seeking input from the community about their vision for water management in their neighbourhood.
