Neighbourhood Noise Complaints

Before taking formal steps in complaining about a noise it is recommended that you attempt to contact your neighbour to discuss the problem and an appropriate resolution. This may require that you tactfully bring the complaint to your neighbours notice when issues are sensitive, such as raised voices.

Exhaust fans and air conditioners have the potential to cause an intrusive type of sound due to their particular tone. Time restrictions are in place for the operation of residential air conditioners and their use is not allowed between 10pm to 7am daily and 10pm to 8am on weekends and public holidays.

If you are unable to resolve the matter by talking with your neighbour, a complaint or request can be made to the City of Sydney's 24 hour complaint line on 02 9265 9333. It is important to relay all details of your complaint, including action already taken and the offending property address when complaining to the City of Sydney to assist its Officers when dealing with your complaint.

Noise complaints made after hours will be referred to the City of Sydney's Rangers who will endeavour to attend in a timely manner. Should the situation be of a more complex nature and prove difficult to remedy, then they will refer the complaint to the City's  Health Compliance Team   who will undertake a more thorough investigation.

All complaints will be investigated and handled in accordance with the New South Wales Noise Guide for Local Government, which can be accessed from the links below.
