Redfern Park and Oval

This federation style park located in the heart of Redfern has been a popular venue for indigenous political and cultural events. Redfern Park and the adjoining Redfern Oval received a major upgrade in 2008. The park contains a naturally shaded children’s playground featuring creative play equipment designed by indigenous artist Fiona Foley and a water play feature.  A new enclosed naturally shaded toddlers playground featuring traditional play equipment was installed in in 2010 . The park contains numerous public art installations, water features and public toilets.

A new grandstand and state of the art playing field have been constructed at the Oval providing professional standard training facilities for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The sports field surrounds are accessible to the public and the field is available for hire by local community sports teams and organisations.

Dogs are permitted off-leash at Redfern Park between the hours of 4:30pm and 9:30am. Dogs must remain on-leash on the oval surrounds at all times. Dogs are prohibited from entering the enclosed sports field and are not permitted near playgrounds and BBQ areas under the Companion Animals legislation.

Brief History of Redfern Park

The land was proclaimed for the purpose of public recreation and named Redfern Park in 1885, following which the park hosted cricket and rugby union games. In 1888 Charles O’Neil designed the formal landscape of the park which included a fountain funded by local resident John Baptist. The fountain is now known as the Baptist Fountain.

The South Sydney Rugby League team commenced to play their home games at Redfern Park from 1948 until 1996.

In 1996 The Prime Minister Paul Keating delivered his historic Redfern Speech at the park to commemorate International Year of the World’s Indigenous People.
