Collection days & bins
Every week, the City collects waste and recycling from over 90,000 houses and apartments. The collection days depend on where you live.
If you live in a house
Call 02 9265 9333 or check online if you are unsure about your collection day.
If you live in an apartment
We arrange collections through your building manager. If you are a building manager or caretaker, you can order resources to help the residents in your building separate their waste.
Your bins
Each house in the City of Sydney has a general waste bin (with a red lid) and a commingled recycling bin (with a yellow lid).
If you live in a unit, there may be 3 types of bins in your communal bin room – for general waste (red lid), mixed container recycling (yellow lid) and paper and cardboard recycling (blue lid).
NB: The bins with blue lids are gradually being replaced by yellow bins, which will accept both mixed containers and paper and cardboard.
How to put out and store your bins
Put your bins out the night before collection day, near the kerb and in a
spot where it won’t block pedestrian, bicycle or vehicle access. Remember
to:
- Place all waste in your bins (bags next to the bin won’t be collected)
- Close the lid
- Retrieve and store your bins on your property soon after collection.
All your bins must be stored on your property between collections – not on the footpath or street.
Bins left out on the street or footpath can create safety hazards and cause littering problems if they get knocked over. They are also more likely to be damaged, stolen or lost.
Things we can’t collect
Paints and solvents, batteries, soil and building materials should never be put in your general waste (or recycling) bins. Sharps (needles) also require safe disposal – call us for details.
Trouble storing your bin?
Then call us. We have a range of shapes and sizes available. Choose the bin that's right for your property and keep it off the streets between collections.
The bins in the image below show the types available.
Red = Garbage, Yellow = Recycling and Green = Garden Organics.
