Recycling Guide

The City of Sydney is committed to recycling and we need your continued support to reduce waste to landfill.

Currently, residents divert approximately 30% of their waste from landfill. As a community we need to work together to increase this figure and recycle more of our household waste.

Benefits of Recycling

Recycling has many benefits for our community. It:

  • reduces the amount of waste disposed to landfill
  • conserves natural resources and protects the environment
  • increases the life span of materials
  • reduces greenhouse gas emissions
  • conserves landfill space
  • reduces disposal costs.

The NSW State Government has set aggressive targets for waste avoidance and resource recovery. By 2014, we must recycle more to increase the amount of waste being diverted from landfill from the current 30 per cent to 66 per cent. The State Government Waste Levy has also been increased, which means that we now pay more to send our waste to landfill.

What Items are Suitable for Recycling?

Download our brochure for Multi Unit Dwellings. This guide is for dwellings like apartments, units, and townhouses. A printed version and a version for Single Dwellings will also be available next year.

The City provides free signs for communal garbage rooms in Multi-Unit Dwellings to highlight to residents what can and can't be recycled.

New signs are currently being produced. Signs will be available from late April 2008.

The City also recognises that you may not have the latest bins available to unit blocks and would like to hear from you if you don’t have the same bins as shown below.

Ask your building manager, caretaker or secretary of the Body Corporate to order new bins and signs by filling in the online form or calling 9265 9333.
