What the City is doing
The City of Sydney has an integrated approach to Sydney’s waste management challenges. More than just waste collection and disposal, it covers services, education programs, law enforcement and policies.
Managing waste
In addition to waste and recycling collections, the City manages
- street cleansing
- parks and open spaces cleaning
- and public events waste management.
We also:
- provide community education programs
- enforce laws against illegal dumping, littering and bill posting
- regulate waste facilities for new developments
- and develop the City’s waste policies.
Reducing waste in Council
The City:
- uses office paper which is 50% pre and post consumer waste, 10% cotton liners and 60% sustainable plantation pulp
- operates a paper recycling service in its offices
- uses recycled water collected from rainwater tanks for street cleaning operations
- is undergoing an internal waste audit to improve recycling systems and levels of recycling
- avoids providing bottled water at Council and staff meetings
Recycling building materials
The City operates a Road Materials Recycling Depot at 25 Burrows Road, St Peters. This year we have recycled 19,894 tonnes of road and building material, significantly reducing the need for landfill.
Zero Waste Campaign
Zero Waste is the City's campaign to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Zero waste doesn’t mean zero rubbish. It is about looking at waste as a valuable resource that can be used to create new products and even generate energy.
The idea is to use the rubbish we generate more productively so that nothing that can be reused goes to waste.
