City South

The South has historically been the most industrial of the city's districts. In the mid-1950s, Alexandria, named after battles that occurred around the Egyptian city of Alexandria during the Napoleonic wars, was the nation's largest industrial area and nicknamed ‘the Birmingham of Australia'.

St Peters also has an important place in Sydney's manufacturing history, being responsible for the lion's share of the city’s brick production. The brick pit chimneys that pepper the skyline of Sydney Park, the city's largest parkland, are a lasting, visual reminder of the past. Nearby Beaconsfield is another suburb with a long industrial tradition.

Today, one of Australia's largest urban renewal projects is underway in the heart of this area, at Green Square. The City is committed to making Green Square Town Centre a vibrant urban village that's green in more than just name, incorporating progressive environmental initiatives, cycleways and open spaces, as well as shops, eateries, entertainment and community hubs. Close to the CBD and transport links, the area is projected to have upwards of 33,000 residents by 2021.

Alexandria and nearby Zetland are also transforming themselves with innovative housing developments, welcoming a diverse mix of inner-city residents into this up-and-coming village.
