Paddington's earliest houses were built around the Victoria Army Barracks and date back to the 1840s. Today the area is sought-after thanks to its architecture, chic bars and the hip strip of boutiques lining Oxford Street. Saturday's Paddington Markets add a bohemian ambience, as do the local galleries and arthouse cinemas.

At weekends, nearby Centennial Park is abuzz with joggers, dog-walkers and cyclists, all eager for a dose of fresh air and exercise. The refurbished Centennial Park Cafe is a popular breakfast spot. The Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park also draws its share of city folk, who come to stock up at the farmers market, catch a movie or enjoy a bite to eat.

As Oxford Street meanders towards town, Darlinghurst takes over with its gay and lesbian scene, cheap eats and late-night bookshops.

To the west lies Surry Hills. Once a working-class suburb and centre for the rag trade, this thriving creative quarter now offers a melange of design and vintage stores, pubs and cafes and local bakeries.

Another drawcard for residents from across the city is the area’s eclectic cuisine, which reflects a rich history of multicultural communities, including Greek, Lebanese, Portuguese, Italian and Chinese – all of which have put their stamp on the local restaurant scene.
