Customs House is one of Sydney’s historic landmark buildings, and has featured in the working and cultural life of the city since its construction 1845.
For over 150 years, Customs House played an active role as the primary trade gateway for goods and people flowing into Sydney. It was also host to many national celebrations and events.
The buildings location is also of significant cultural interest and is said to be the site where local Eora people watched the First Fleet land. The Aboriginal flag is now permanently flown from the building.
Customs House was occupied by The Australian Customs Service until 1990. In 1994 The Federal Government handed over management of the building to The City of Sydney.

Customs House is a multipurpose venue, an interactive cultural hub, offering a public space to meet up, relax, browse and socialise. This City of Sydney venue is one of the most iconic heritage buildings in Sydney. Our mostly agreeable climate makes it possible to extend the unique experience of Customs House to a lively square with Young Alfred and Quay Bar eateries on either side of the forecourt.
The popular destination has a broad demographic range including the general public, business professionals, commuters, diners, families, tourists, local residents, creatives and students. Located in the heart of Circular Quay, the landmark building is right on the doorstep of both business professionals (weekdays) and harbour visitors (weekends - predominantly family demographic).
Customs House Square - Forecourt is the beautiful piazza located in front of the building - an ideal space to hire for outdoor events or installations that require an exciting ambience in a high profile part of the Sydney CBD. This part of the square is typically hired out for activities involving event orientated promotions or those involving large structures.
Customs House Square - Alfred Street is ideal for promotional campaigns as it is the highest foot traffic part of the square as well as facing Circular Quay train station entrance. It is situated between the forecourt and the train station.
