What we’re doing

We’re planning a new economic development strategy for our local area. The strategy will set out a plan for how we will support long-term economic growth and prosperity for our community.

Why we’re doing this

In December 2013 we published a 10-year plan to strengthen our economy and support business. Since then, the pandemic and climate crises have affected our economy and our community.

We need to examine the new challenges and consider how to create a sustainable and resilient economic future. The new strategy will set out a short to medium term framework, with high-level actions for the city’s economic recovery and long-term prosperity.

To help us develop the new strategy, we’ve produced a discussion paper. The paper is intended to prompt conversations about how to make our economy more resilient. It proposes 4 strategic directions to achieve that vision:

  • Direction 1 – Transition to a green and circular economy.
  • Direction 2 – Build an innovation economy.
  • Direction 3 – Strengthen our inclusive economy.
  • Direction 4 – Revitalise our city centre.

Case studies give examples of each strategic direction.

We invite you to read our discussion paper and case studies, and share your feedback on how we can work together to build a resilient economy.

Things to consider

  • Do you agree with the vision?
  • Have we got the directions right?
  • Do you have additional case studies or actions to share with us?
  • What do you consider to be the priority for our local economy?
