A World War 2 era anti-aircraft gun in Redfern Park.
Artefact description
As a customary commemoration of World War 1, a previously captured German artillery field gun was turned into a memorial feature in the north-east corner of Redfern Park in the 1920’s.
It was first placed on a pedestal across from the park and moved to the corner location in the park after it was vandalised and forced off its mount. The Australian Army removed the gun in 1941/42 to make scrap for munitions during World War 2.
The Redfern Park Bofors (Artillery) Gun
The present day artillery gun was installed in Redfern Park between 1973 and 1975. It is a World War 2 era Bofors anti-aircraft gun manufactured in 1942 by Nuffield Mechanisation and Aero in England.
Set on a circular gravel bed, the gun was restored along with the Redfern Park upgrade in 2007.
