Artefact description

This cannon around 2m in length belonged to the HMS Sirius, flagship of the First Fleet which arrived at Port Jackson in 1788. It sits on a four-wheeled carriage installed in Macquarie Place in 1907 with an anchor also recovered from the Sirius.

More information

The cannon was recovered off Norfolk Island in 1905, where it lay since the wreck of the Sirius on 19 March 1790. Along with the HMS Supply, the Sirius had been carrying supplies to Norfolk Island when it was wrecked on Norfolk Reef. A plaque credits the discovery of the wreck in 1905 to the efforts of Sir F Suttor.
