343 George Street: façade remediation works

Project Status: Planned

Why we’re doing this

This heritage-listed building on the corner of George and Barrack streets has commanding views of Martin Place.

The site is steeped in local history and was once the headquarters of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney from the 1850s until its merger with the National Bank of Australasia in the 1980s.

The building was constructed in 2 stages from 1921 to 1925 and was known as Barrack House. It’s a significant example of the city’s interwar architecture and was heritage listed in 1999.

Today the building features 10 upper office floors and retail on the ground floor.

These extensive renewal works will ensure the building remains a significant commercial space for retail and office use.

What we’re doing

The building at 343 George Street will undergo an upgrade on 2 street fronts.

Renewal works to the cement render, concrete, steel and bronze windows and copper weatherings on the Barrack  Lane façade of the building were completed in December 2023.

This next stage of works to the George and Barrack streets façades will include:

  • cleaning and repairing the sandstone
  • replacing and stabilising the sandstone parapets
  • replacing the roof’s copper weathering
  • cleaning and repairing the steel and bronze windows
  • new façade lighting.
