Employees with disability

When we talk about people with disability, it may include people with mental health conditions, people who are neurodivergent and people with long-term or chronic health conditions. Disability can be visible or invisible, permanent or temporary.

Our inclusion (disability) action plan, developed with help from our Inclusion (Disability) Advisory Panel, addresses barriers in access and inclusion and advocates for the rights of people with disability.

We recognise disability as barriers created by society, not an individual’s condition or medical diagnosis. Inclusion of people with disability is good for workplaces and communities as diversity of lived experience leads to better innovation and ways of working better together.

Some of the ways we support our employees with disability include:

  • allowing for changes to help employees perform their roles effectively through our workplace adjustment policy
  • flexible working arrangements to meet personal commitments or needs
  • bringing together people with lived experience to improve access and inclusion and provide peer support through our disability employee network
  • our employee assistance program and peer support program
  • helping members and their families facing financial hardship from loss of income through illness, injury, or death through our employee welfare fund
  • ensuring we remove access barriers through inclusive and accessible communications and guidelines
  • hosting inclusive events that raise awareness, such as International Day of People with Disability, R U OK? Day and National Carers Week
  • raising inclusion awareness through training programs.

Carers

Our supportive culture helps carers feel comfortable sharing their responsibilities and need for flexibility.

We achieve this with our:

  • flexible working arrangements to help carers meet their commitments
  • personal carer’s leave and bereavement leave
  • disability allies and carers network, which brings employees together to support, promote and advocate for greater disability inclusion
  • employee assistance program, which includes free counselling for employees and their families
  • employee welfare fund to help members and their families facing financial hardship from loss of income through illness, injury or death.
