BaptistCare

In 2023, BaptistCare participated in our renewable electricity masterclasses for businesses. It was one of the first participants to make the switch to renewable electricity by signing a renewable power purchase agreement (PPA).

BaptistCare’s experience shows how other organisations can develop their knowledge, take action and share lessons.

What it did

  • Over 12 months, BapistCare worked with a consultant to investigate its energy use, develop a strong business case for a renewable PPA, and go to tender.
  • Signed a PPA to source 15,000 MWh of renewable energy a year from NSW solar and wind farms starting in 2025. This was in the form of a 10-year agreement with an energy retailer.

This deal means BaptistCare will reduce the carbon footprint of its NSW and ACT operations by 70% off a 2022 baseline of scope 1 and 2 emissions.

“It’s a way to ensure BaptistCare is a part of the just transition. We care for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, and this PPA, paired with other initiatives, is one part of our commitment to caring for people, planet and the community. We’re proud to help lead the aged care and community sector towards a just transition to renewable energy.”

What it learned

  • One of the hurdles can be a preconceived idea about price. People often think that GreenPower will be significantly more expensive than traditional energy sources. This is not necessarily the case. Taking the time to educate stakeholders and decision-makers about benefits of a PPA for the business is important.
  • A 10-year deal means better price certainty, attractive in today’s fluid energy market.

Unexpected benefits

  • Better energy pricing
  • Long-term price certainty
  • Many employees were excited to learn about the organisation’s commitment to going renewable.

Tips for others

BapistCare recommends the following to other organisations looking to go 100% renewable through a PPA.

  • Do it sooner. The sooner you get started, the sooner you can realise the financial and environmental benefits for your business.
  • Connect with other businesses and learn from industry peers.
  • Start the process early. It can take time to do the research, build your business case and get the support for it. Give yourself the time to build this and understand the time frames of your existing energy contracts.
