Hosting 575 apartments across 11 buildings, Moore Park Gardens is an apartment complex in Surry Hills with 4 strata plans.

Along with rooftop solar and communal garden areas, the complex has a large outdoor pool available to residents all year round.

The pool was heated to 26°C using gas pumps. After obtaining a NABERS rating and an energy action plan through a green building grant, steps were identified to reduce costs and energy use. These focused on pool maintenance due to ageing assets.

What it did

  • Introduced a strict regime of covering the pool in the evening when not in use. This helps retain the water temperature and reduces the amount of heating required in the morning.
  • Gas pumps were removed and replaced with electric heat pumps. The installation area required is around the size of a car space, 5m by 2.5m. The new electric heat pumps are installed in a naturally ventilated car park, underneath the pool itself. This allows a constant clean air supply – critical for ensuring safe operation of heat pumps.

Results

  • More consistent, pleasurable water temperature all year round
  • Electric heat pumps eliminate the risks associated with gas appliances, such as gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning, providing a safer living environment for residents.

"The switch was a relatively simple process, although the savings expected were not achieved due to the sheer size of the pool and it being outdoors. Reduced maintenance costs and consistent temperatures all year round keep our residents very happy.”
