We have 2 types of membership available.
Full membership for NSW residents
- Free membership valid for 3 years.
- With this membership you can borrow from any of our branches and access our digital collections through your online account. City of Sydney residents can join the library without visiting a branch. View our boundaries to check if you are eligible.
Membership for non-NSW residents
- Membership is valid for 1 month.
- If you’re an interstate or international visitor to Sydney, without a permanent NSW address, you can apply for membership.
- With this membership you can borrow from any of our branches and access our digital collections through your online account.
- Borrowing limits apply.
What you need to do

Create a City of Sydney account and join the library
Experience greater security and access to our library and other services by joining with a City of Sydney account. Your City of Sydney account uses your email address and a password as the login. You’ll be able to use this same login to access other City of Sydney services.
- Go to the library online catalogue and select Join
- Select Create an account and follow the prompts
- When the account is created, select Join the library
- Follow the prompts to complete the library membership form
Join the library with an existing City of Sydney account
If you have a City of Sydney account, it’s easy to complete a membership form to join our library.
- Go to the library online catalogue and select Join
- Log in using your City of Sydney account email and password
- Select Join the library
- Follow the prompts to compete the library membership form
Join the library without an email address
If you don’t have an email address you can still join the library.
- Go to the library online catalogue and select Join
- Select Create an account and then the option I don’t have an email
- Follow the prompts to compete the library membership form
If you can’t access the online form, visit a branch open for browsing and borrowing.

Activate your membership
To finalise your membership and collect your library card, visit a staffed branch.
You’ll need to show proof of identity and permanent residential address.
Official documents such as a driver license, student card, bank statement, rates or utilities notice are accepted.
If you are a City of Sydney resident you can email a copy of your proof of identity to [email protected]. View our boundaries to check if you are eligible.

Applicants under 18 years old
A parent or guardian is required to approve your application. They will need to visit a branch with you to show proof of identity, including their residential address and Medicare card listing your name.
