Holding small gatherings in parks and public spaces
Project Status: When you need to do this
City of Sydney parks and public spaces are open for everyone to enjoy.
You are not required to apply or book for small private gatherings without infrastructure such as birthday parties, picnics and neighbourhood get-togethers for residents and community groups.
You need to apply and gain approval if you’re holding an outdoor event such as a festival, cultural ceremony and celebration, temporary market, live outdoor entertainment or an industry related promotion or exhibition. Fees apply.
Wedding ceremonies and marriage proposals are a special type of outdoor event. You can apply to hold a ceremony or proposal in our parks and public spaces. Ceremonies and proposals that do not use any infrastructure or equipment and do not expect exclusive use of a facility such as a rotunda do not need to apply for approval.
What you need to do
You do not need to apply or book to hold small gatherings provided you aren’t bringing infrastructure into a park or public space. This includes furniture, equipment, marquees and jumping castles.
Organised activities that include infrastructure may be classified as an outdoor event. You will need to apply and be approved for event activities.
Note, you cannot reserve barbecues, playgrounds or other City of Sydney furniture for your small gathering.
You need to follow any park or open space signs.
Keep in mind that our parks and public spaces are shared spaces, and other gatherings and activities may be taking place nearby.
