Artwork description
In 1888, Charles O’Neil designed the formal landscape of Redfern Park which included an ornate fountain. Presented to the public by local entrepreneur and nurseryman John Baptist in 1890, the Baptist Fountain is a Victorian era, tiered, cast iron fountain surmounted by a figure of an intertwined boy and serpent. Decorative cast iron scrollwork and lion heads adorn the central element above and below the 2 fountain bowls. The fountain is situated on a cruciform-shaped concrete plinth. Located at the northern end of Redfern Park, it underwent major conservation work during Redfern Park's upgrade in 2007.
