What we’re doing

We’re extending the pedestrian boulevard on George Street from Hunter Street to Essex Street. These works will make George Street greener, help increase passing trade for local businesses and make it easier for people to walk around.

Our contractor, Sydney Civil will:

  • extend the footpaths alongside the light rail between Hunter and Essex streets, entirely removing the vehicular lanes
  • upgrade the footpath at the intersection of York, Jamison and Lang streets
  • create new public plazas at the road closure of Margaret, Bond, Jamison and Dally streets
  • match the existing improvements at the entrance to Wynyard train station in Wynyard Lane with paving to Wynyard Street (east of Carrington Street) and Wynyard Lane
  • widen and make footpaths more accessible to allow for more alfresco dining areas with new granite paving
  • plant more trees, new garden beds, and new bubblers, bike racks and seating
  • provide opportunities for hanging baskets and banners with new smartpoles with LED streetlights
  • improve stormwater drainage and relocate service utilities.

Emergency services and local access will be maintained during the works.

Why we’re doing this

We asked for your feedback in 2022 on our proposal to extend the George Street pedestrian boulevard from Hunter Street to Essex Street.

In 2023 we introduced temporary closures of George Street from Hunter Street to Bridge Street and Bridge Street to Essex Street to prepare for these works.

Once completed, our vision for a fully pedestrianised George Street from Circular Quay to Central station will be a step closer, with more than 20,000m² of former roadway reclaimed for people.
