Artwork description

The sundial World War 2 memorial stands in a small paved crescent, surrounded by a low red brick wall and eight 8 red brick dwarf columns, capped with white stone. It is set in a small garden within the El Alamein Reserve, facing the footpath along Dalmeny Avenue, Rosebery.

The memorial consists of a simple, polished red granite column on a sandstone slab plinth. The column stands on a square base and is topped with a square capital stone, with a brass sundial set into the centre.

There are 2 red granite flower troughs on the sandstone plinth in front of the column, set on the diagonal to the column’s corners.

Inscriptions

The sundial is ringed by a white etched inscription that reads:

Heaven is my guide. I cannot go wrong.

The inscription etched in white letters on the polished red granite column lists the names of 16 local servicemen lost during the war, and reads:

In Memory of Citizens of Rosebery who gave their lives in the Second World War 1939–1945
Greater love hath no man than he who lays down his life for his country
Erected by the Rosebery A.I.F. Auxiliary Fund
