Upgrade works for Douglas Street Playground Redfern

Project Status: In progress

What we’re doing

We’re upgrading Douglas Street Playground in Redfern after we worked closely with the community on the designs.

The upgrade works include:

  • improved entry from Douglas Street with new entry ramp
  • new garden bed that reveals existing sandstone terrace steps and improved sightlines into the park
  • new and improved playground with hopscotch, trampolines and a double swing with seat and toddler basket
  • new play structure with slides, deck platform, balance bridge, climbing net, spiral pole, activity panels and rubber softfall
  • new nature play including sandstone blocks and timber balance beams
  • enhanced shrub and ground cover plantings to go under the existing mature trees and removal of 2 small pencil pines
  • installing a new park history panel and a water bubbler.

A large tallowwood tree was removed from the site in late 2023 due to poor health. A new fabric shade structure will provide sun protection.

The reserve and the playground will be closed during the upgrade.

Why we’re doing this

This is part of our parks upgrade program where over the next 10 years we will upgrade more than 60 parks across the City of Sydney area, from small pocket parks to larger local parks.

In late 2022 we asked local community groups and residents for their feedback on the concept design.

Council approved this project at its February 2023 meeting.
