Have your say on an updated review of environmental factors for the cycleways on Moore Park Road, Centennial Park and Fitzroy Street, Surry Hills
The review of environmental factors will allow the temporary cycleways to remain for up to 3 years or until Transport for NSW completes the cycleway on Oxford Street.
Project Status: Closed
Council approved the review of environmental factors on 15 May 2023.
Why we’re doing this
The temporary cycleway on Moore Park Road was installed in mid-2020 to provide a safe connection for people riding between the city and the east. In May 2021 Council endorsed a review of environmental factors that would allow the cycleway to remain until May 2023.
We always intended to remove the pop-up cycleway on Moore Park Road when the Oxford Street east cycleway is complete. Transport for NSW only recently began public consultation on the project scope for the cycleway and unfortunately, it will not be completed this year, as previously anticipated.
However, until then, we need to ensure this important cycling connection is maintained. Latest data from Transport for NSW shows the temporary cycleway is used for 1,500 to 2,000 trips each week. The Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street cycleway provides a safer alternative to cycling along Oxford Street for people riding between Bondi Junction and the city. It also provides an important east-west cycling connection.
What we’re doing
We’re proposing to extend approval for the temporary cycleways on Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street for up to 3 years, or until the Oxford Street east cycleway between Centennial Park and Taylor Square is completed by the NSW Government.
The review of environmental factors for this proposed extension is now open for feedback. The review considers the current state of the street, impacts of the pop-up cycleway, and project benefits.
