Village high streets will be transformed into spaces for walking, shopping and dining for one day only.
Sydney Streets is part of our community recovery plan, supporting the economic and social recovery of businesses and local communities impacted by the pandemic.
Our aim is to celebrate local neighbourhoods, bring communities together and support our high street businesses. For local businesses, it’s an opportunity to produce in-store activations to help attract customers and patrons to their venues, and potentially extend trading to outdoors subject to availability and approval.
We called for expressions of interest from businesses along each high street to use public space for outdoor dining, foyer space and live performance. These measures will help enliven our local neighbourhoods and encourage visitors onto the streets to support local businesses.
We consulted with Transport for NSW and NSW Police Force, and gained approval from the Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee for the temporary closures.
The temporary use of footpaths and public open spaces for outdoor dining, outdoor foyers and performance space is in line with the Liquor Act 2007. The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority, Transport for NSW and NSW Police Commissioner have been notified. The 7-day public notification period for Redfern, Darlinghurst and Haymarket runs from 14 April 2023.
