Proposed temporary outdoor foyers for cultural venues and live performance in outdoor dining areas
These temporary Covid-19 recovery programs will assist performing artists, and local businesses and cultural venues to ensure physical distancing of customers and patrons.

Why we’re doing this
Cultural venues and performing artists have been hit hard by the ongoing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The City of Sydney wants to help these businesses to operate safely and to enable new opportunities to support live performance.
That is why we will temporarily approve live performance in outdoor dining areas and allow cultural venues to extend their foyers outdoors into public space to assist with social distancing.
What we’re doing
Live performance in outdoor dining areas
Businesses in the city centre can apply to include live performance in their outdoor dining areas.
Live performance may occur:
- up to 4 days a week
- up to 2 hours a day.
- between 10am and 10pm.
Temporary guidelines will apply to live performance in outdoor dining areas. Businesses wanting to take up the opportunity must apply through our fee-free fast-tracked application process.

Cultural venues can apply to extend their foyers outdoors to assist with social distancing of patrons.
Outdoor foyer areas must be immediately adjacent to the venue entrance and applicants will need to lodge a proposed plan for the area.
Outdoor foyers may operate 1 hour before and 1 hour after advertised performances or public events.
Venues across the City of Sydney area may apply, although conditions may be placed on venues in residential areas. We will assess each proposal on its merits and in line with our temporary guidelines for outdoor foyers.

We will notify neighbouring properties in writing when a business or venue applies for live performance in outdoor dining or an outdoor foyer.
