Why we’re doing this
In its Pyrmont Peninsula Place Strategy, the NSW Government has committed to relocating the greyhound track, currently licenced to the Greyhound Breeders Owners & Trainers Association until 2027, to create one large, unified park.
The north and south sections of the park are currently under the City of Sydney’s care. We welcome the state government’s commitment to provide this significant parcel of Crown land as public open space.
Working towards a consolidated park is also an identified action in the City of Sydney’s Wentworth Park plan of management. When the City of Sydney is appointed Crown land manager for the entire park, we’ll revise the plan of management to reflect the community’s vision for this open space.
What we’re doing
We invite you to imagine a unified park and tell us what you’d like to see and do there. From sports facilities, to playgrounds and spaces for relaxation, we want to hear how you use the park now, what you like about it and how you see it being used in the future.
Next steps
We’ll use your feedback to create a community vision for Wentworth Park and will make this available in 2024.
About Wentworth Park
Wentworth Park is on the traditional land of the Gadigal people. The park sits on what was the swampy mouth of Blackwattle Creek. Originally a tidal watercourse, it was a source of fresh water and a place for fishing and other activities for Sydney’s Aboriginal peoples.
Between the 1830s and 1860s, noxious industries polluted these wetlands. After removal of these industries, the area was filled in and a park was created.
It was first dedicated as a park in 1885 and has played a significant role in the sporting, recreational and cultural life of the Glebe, Ultimo and Pyrmont communities for many years.
Crown land
The City of Sydney manages 48 Crown land reserves including Wentworth Park, Hyde Park, Victoria Park, Martin Place and many smaller areas.
The north and south sections of Wentworth Park are Crown land currently under the City of Sydney’s care. The greyhound complex site in the central section of the park is Crown land currently managed by a state government appointed administrator.
Under the Crown Land Management Act 2016, we’re required to have a plan of management for all Crown lands in our care. This ensures we look after these places based on community, environmental and heritage needs.
In 2020, we consulted our communities to inform the development of the Wentworth Park plan of management. The outcomes of the consultation highlighted the importance of this cultural place and its capacity to cater for recreational needs. Many members of the community also expressed their support for the removal of the greyhound complex.
The concept planning work we’re undertaking for a future consolidated park is an adopted action within the plan of management and responds to this.
Upon appointment as Crown land manager of the central section, we’ll revise the Wentworth Park plan of management to recognise new management targets and strategies that reflect the community’s vision of this open space.
