At its meeting on 17 March 2025, Council resolved to prioritise local Aboriginal creative and cultural use of 107 Redfern Street.

Redfern is recognised as a significant place of Aboriginal life, resistance and self-determination, with an enduring history of community-led movements, cultural pride and leadership.

About this opportunity

We have 6 spaces available at 107 Redfern Street, Redfern for cultural and creative use through our short-term empty properties program.

This 2-storey industrial-style facility is in the heart of Redfern.

Tenancy length: 12 months
Cost: $100 a week per space plus GST. Consideration may be given to individual circumstances and rates may vary.

Cultural and creative leaders, artists, knowledge holders and creative workers are invited to apply for a space, a combination of spaces, the full ground floor or first floor. All spaces will be unfurnished.

We strongly encourage Aboriginal-led and community-controlled organisations and cultural practitioners to apply.

This opportunity is designed to activate 107 Redfern Street while we consider its future as a centre for Aboriginal creativity and culture.

Eligible applicants can apply for a cash grant from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collaboration fund to support the activation, establishment or programming of the spaces.

We own several commercial and community properties, including retail and office space. These properties may be empty for short periods between tenancies.

The short-term empty properties program provides immediate and temporary occupancy of under-used properties within our portfolio. The properties are offered for at least one month.

Our program supports:
- creative practitioners and cultural organisations
- community organisations and social enterprises
- businesses and startups that support the local economy
- organisations with a focus on sustainability and the environment.
Preference is given to applicants in our area or to projects that can demonstrate significant benefit to local communities.
- Knowledge sharing and cultural teaching classes and workshops
- Healing and wellbeing programs
- Ceremony
- Creative or community classes and workshops
- Artist studios and working spaces
- Producing, developing, displaying or presenting (exhibitions, projects, programs, classes, events, making/cultural production, readings, openings, screenings)
- Collaborative workspace for creatives or community members
- Hosting responsive project pop-ups, events and activities
- Increasing opportunities for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations
- Activities that reflect our cultural, social, economic and environmental strategies and action plans
- Boosting connection with the local community, including artists and creative organisations, small business and visitors
- Stimulating local economies by encouraging a diverse business mix with innovative or capacity building enterprises
- Furthering opportunities and exposure for emerging and established enterprises including artists.

Eligibility

You must show how your proposal benefits our residents, workers and visitors.

Applicants must demonstrate that payment of standard rates would cause financial hardship.

- Incorporated association
- Unincorporated community group auspiced by an eligible not-for-profit organisation
- Corporation
- Co-operative
- Partnership
- Sole trader
- Trustee of a trust.
This program is open to for-profit entities.
