Why we’re doing this

We’re updating our neighbourhood on-street parking policy to make sure it meets the needs of our growing, vibrant city.

The policy aims to balance parking demand from residents, businesses and visitors while supporting a green and connected Sydney. It applies across our area except in Central Sydney where a separate policy applies.

We know that many people need to drive for a range of purposes. In our area, around 37% of households don’t own a vehicle and 44% own one vehicle.

Demand for parking in our city will always exceed supply. Offering other transport options like walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing helps free up parking spaces for those who need to drive.

The policy aims to manage parking in a way that works for most people as we plan for more residents, workers and visitors.

The policy was introduced in 2014 and updated in 2018.

What we’re doing

We’re proposing updates to improve how the policy works, make it easier to understand and align it with our strategies and plans.

Key facts about the policy:

  • There are around 41,300 on-street parking spaces in the local area, not including Central Sydney.
  • It provides guidance on time limits.
  • It outlines parking permit schemes for residents, businesses, visitors, support workers and carers.
  • All fees are reviewed each year as part of our operational plan.
