Short-term rental accommodation refers to a property rented for a short period of time, either privately, or on platforms such as Airbnb or Stayz. Short-term rentals are regulated through NSW planning, fair trading and strata laws.

In May 2023 Council resolved to commission a study on the impact short-term rental accommodation has on rental affordability and availability, and tourist accommodation in the City of Sydney local area.

In early 2024 we asked for community feedback on short-term rental accommodation in the local area. This feedback informed the study.

The study identifies a suite of policy options to improve the regulation of short-term rental accommodation and address its impact on housing affordability and the tourism industry.
