Your feedback informed our study of short-term rental accommodation in the City of Sydney local area.
We referred to our study in our submission to the NSW Government to consider in its review of the planning policy and regulatory framework for short-term rental accommodation.
The NSW Government will consider all submissions and investigate policy changes with the objective of unlocking housing supply and improving housing affordability in NSW. Following this review, we’ll consider if further changes to local planning controls are required. We’ll report any proposed changes to Council.

We invite feedback from short term rental property owners, renters and people who are neighbours to a short-term rental property.
Your feedback will help us understand why some property owners choose to rent their properties on a short-term basis as well as the experiences of people who use short-term rental accommodation and people who live near it.
In May 2023 Council resolved to investigate commissioning a study to report on the impact short-term rental accommodation has on rental affordability and availability, and tourist accommodation in the City of Sydney local area.
Short-term rental accommodation refers to a property rented for a short period of time, either privately, or on platforms such as Airbnb or Stayz. Short-term rentals are regulated through NSW planning, fair trading and strata laws.
The NSW Government plans to review how short-term rental accommodation is regulated across the state. Its review is seeking ways to better utilise all forms of housing.
Our study will provide a better understanding of the impacts of short-term rental accommodation relevant to the City of Sydney local area.
We will report to the Housing for All Working Group and Council with the findings and recommendations of our study.
