What we’re doing

We’ve prepared a discussion paper to gather feedback on the future of gas in new developments, focusing on electrification. This supports our goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2035, promote healthier homes and tackle cost-of-living challenges.

Electrification means using all-electric systems instead of gas for heating, cooking, and other energy needs. The paper looks at the challenges and benefits of having gas free, all-electric new developments.

Why we’re doing this

The shift to electrification is driven by the need for sustainable building practices in response to climate change, as well as growing consumer and investor expectations. All-electric buildings offer many benefits, even beyond easy access to renewable energy. These include lower long-term operation costs and healthier spaces for occupants. This is why we’re considering introducing planning controls to prevent fossil fuel gas network connections in new development.

We’re exploring several approaches to move towards electrification. We want to know which approach is preferred, if certain industries should be exempt and if there are any challenges to overcome that haven’t been considered in the discussion paper.
